deserve a vote because of the human faces of violence in this country, like 15-year-old hadiya pendleton of chicago. >> just three weeks ago she was here in washington with her classmates, performing for her country in my inauguration. and a week later, she was shot and killed in a chicago park after school. just a mile away from my house. >> a mile away from the president's house in chicago. this is clearly personal to this president. and it's personal for all the families of gun violence who have been touched by it in this country. on their behalf, president obama made a passionate plea. >> hadiya's parents nate and cleo are in this chamber tonight, along with more than two dozen americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. they deserve a vote. they deserve a vote. they deserve a vote. gabby giffords deserves a vote. the families of newtown deserve a vote. the families of aurora deserve a vote. the families of oak creek and tucson and blacksburg and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence, they deserve a simple vote. >> i have been to a number of thes

of hadiya pendleton, the chicago teen who performed at his inauguration, and obviously as we know, she was shot and killed just days afterwards. and now we have another death coming just hours after he makes his speech in chicago. and it's all just a sampling of what the president talked about, a newtown every four months happening in our cities, isn't it? >> that's right. i mean, listen, it's very, very important that the president was there and that he gave this speech. it's really a testament like princeton professor said on twitter, it's a testament to the black youth activists who started the petition and started the pressure on the president to come back home and to address these issues. it's a good model for the black opportunity and progressive activists who are interested in pushing this president to do certain things that making your voice heard does matter. >> the president was deeply personal in this speech about the importance of fathers. take a listen. >> there's no more important ingredient for success, nothing that would be more important for us reducing violence than s

side. [applause] last weekend she came home but it was to attend the funeral of hadiya pendleton. and hadiya's parents, by the way, are here and i want to acknowledge them. they are just wonderful, wonderful people. [applause] as you know this week in my state of the union i talked about hadiya on tuesday night. and the fact that, unfortunately, what happened to hadiya is not unique. it's not unique to chicago, it's not unique to this country. too many of our children are being taken away from us. two months ago, america mourned 26 innocent first-graders and their educators in newtown. and today i had the high honor of giving the highest civilian award i can give to the parents -- or the families of the educators who had been killed in newtown. and there was something profound and uniquely heartbreaking and tragic, obviously, about a group of 6- year-olds being killed. but last year there were 434 murders with a firearm on the streets of this city, and 65 of those victims were 18 and under. so that's the equivalent of a newtown every four months. and that's precisely why the over

before a judge today facing murder charges. police say they killed hadiya pendleton on a playground, days after she performed at president obama's inauguration parade. she was shot a mile north of the obamas' home in chicago. ted rowland joins us from the courthouse. ted, first of all, what do we know about these guys and how were they caught? >> well, suzanne, we just left the bond area here, michael ward, 18-year-old michael ward and 20-year-old kenneth williams. in the hearing we learned more about the case against them. first off, the judge did not release them on bond. they are on no bond situation. so they will be in custody until their next court appearance. but what we're learning from prosecutors in front of this prosecutor, laid out the case, they say that ward, the 18-year-old, confessed on videotape to them with specifics about circling this park where she and her friends were after school, after they finished their final exams and believing that one of the rival gang members, to their gang, was in this group. he said, according to police, and according to prosecutors, he got

than 500 murders, and, of course, you have the high-profile murder of 15-year-old hadiya pendleton, whose parents attended the state of the union address. the president will talk about creating economic opportunities, so that young people will not turn to a life of crime. but he al also continue to put pressure on congress to take action. such as the universal background checks or the ban on some assault weapons and those high capacity magazines, but there is great resistance from gun rights groups like the nra who are concerned about their second amendment rights, they believe that officials need to start enforcing existing laws instead of creating new ones. john. >> all right. thanks a lot, dan lothian at the white house. no comment from the white house this morning on a verbal blast from nra leader wayne la pierre who accuses the president of exploiting the sandy hook tragedy. la pierre says gun rights activists won't take this lying down. >> mr. president, we will stand and fight throughout this country as americans for all freedom. we promise you that. >> so in an op-ed yester
